- French drain (interior). A drainage channel and pipe inside the crawlspace perimeter that collects any water that does get in and routes it to a sump.
- Sump system. A pit and pump that collects water from the interior drain and pumps it out and away from the house. For homes near Lake Whatcom or on the river flats, a sump is often essential.
- Vapor barrier. A heavy plastic sheet over the crawlspace ground that stops soil moisture from evaporating up into the space. It doesn't move water, but it breaks the humidity cycle that rots wood.
- Grading. The cheapest and most overlooked fix: making sure the ground around the house slopes away from it so surface water sheds off instead of pooling at the foundation.
