09 · Questions

Frequently asked questions.

The questions we hear most from Bellingham homeowners, answered straight.

How much does foundation repair cost in Bellingham?
Most foundation repairs in Bellingham run $3,500 to $18,000. A single crack injection can start around $700, while underpinning or piering a settled footing is the high end. Our wet ground keeps the soil moving, so drainage is usually part of the fix. We give you a free, written, line-item quote before any work starts.
Is my foundation crack cosmetic or serious?
A thin vertical hairline in a slab is usually shrinkage and nothing to worry about. A stair-step crack in a block wall, a horizontal crack that's bowing inward, or a door that suddenly won't latch are signs the foundation is moving and should be looked at. We come out, read it for you, and if it's cosmetic we'll tell you to leave it alone.
What concrete mix and reinforcement do you use?
We pour a 4,000+ psi mix as our standard, with rebar or wire mesh sized to the load: mesh for light slabs, a rebar grid for vehicles, equipment, and structural work, and engineered rebar for footings and walls. We add fiber to the mix where it helps control shrinkage cracking. The right combination depends on the job, and it's in your written quote.
Do I need a permit, and who pulls it?
Anything structural, footings, foundations, and retaining walls over 4 feet, needs a City of Bellingham or Whatcom County permit and an inspection. We handle both. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection, and meet the inspector on-site so you don't have to chase the paperwork.
How deep do footings have to go in Whatcom County?
The WA State building code frost-depth for footings in Whatcom County is 12 inches minimum below finished grade, and deeper on exposed or higher-elevation lots like Sudden Valley. Inspectors check the depth, which is one reason we pull the permit and schedule the footing inspection on every structural pour.
How long until I can drive or build on new concrete?
You can usually walk on fresh flatwork the next day, but it takes about 5 to 7 days in our climate before concrete is strong enough to drive on, and a footing or foundation is ready to build on after it cures and passes inspection. We give you the exact window for your pour and protect the cure in cold or wet stretches.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Bellingham Concrete Co. is operated by Apex Builderz LLC, a licensed, bonded, and insured Washington general contractor, WA Contractor Reg. # APEXBBL749B1, UBI 604-945-342. We carry general liability insurance and we're happy to show you the paperwork. Just ask.
When is the best time of year to pour concrete in Bellingham?
We pour year-round. In the wet season we protect the cure from rain and use cold-weather practices when temperatures drop, so the concrete gains strength properly. Summer and early fall give the easiest curing conditions, but with the right protection a winter pour holds up just as well, and our schedule is often more open then.
